An insecticide is a crop-protection chemical formulated to kill or control insect pests that damage crops through feeding, egg-laying or disease transmission. Insecticides are broadly grouped by chemistry — organophosphates and carbamates that disrupt insect nervous systems, pyrethroids that act on contact, and newer systemic classes absorbed into plant tissue — and by target stage, with larvicides specifically formulated against larvae rather than adult insects. Choosing the right insecticide depends on the target pest, its life stage, and the crop being protected, and rotating between different chemistries and modes of action helps prevent insect populations from developing resistance over successive seasons.
