A biostimulant is a substance or micro-organism applied to plants or soil to improve nutrient uptake, growth, and tolerance to environmental stress — distinct from a fertilizer, which directly supplies nutrients, and a pesticide, which controls pests or disease. Biostimulants include seaweed extracts, amino-acid-based formulations, humic and fulvic acid compounds, and microbial products that work by enhancing a plant's own physiological processes rather than adding nutrients or killing a pathogen directly. They are commonly used at specific crop growth stages — root development, vegetative growth, flowering, or fruiting — to support the plant through stress conditions like drought, heat, or transplant shock, and are typically applied alongside a standard fertilizer programme rather than in place of one.
